FATALITY IN CITY STREET
CYCLIST COLLIDES WITH TRAM An inquest was opened this morning concerning the death of William Powell, who received fatal injuries in an accident at the Leviathan Hotel corner yesterday afternoon. The deceased was riding a cycle along Cumberland street and was crossing into Lower High street. A motor car travelling ahead of him stopped to allow a tram to pass, and the deceased apparently cycled on to its right. He evidently failed to notice the tram approaching and collided with it, being thrown on to the side of the tram. Ho was rushed to the hospital, but died a few minutes later. The deceased was aged sixty, and was married with a grown-up family. A bricklayer by occupation, he resided at 8 Selwyn street North-east Valley. Sergeant M'Carthy conducted a preliminary inquest before Mr Bartholomew, S.M., this morning. Evidence of identification was given hr a son, William Powell, >n., who said that his father had enjoyed good health. His hearing was quite good. Dr Brown testified that death was due to laceration of the brain billowing a depressed fracture of the sum. The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed later.
