Douglas Fairbanks, who usually rescues demure blonde ladies from buttresses of castles in his pictures, discovers that modem girls are in no need of rescuing in his now United Artists’ picture ‘ Reaching for the Moon,’ now showing at the Regent Theatre. Bebe Daniels, who plays a modern society aviatrix, proves a match for Fairbanks, especially when it comes to love. She leads him on a chase clear across the Atlantic.

OCTAGON

Never docs young love have so difficult a time of it as in ‘ Eyes of the World,’ showing at the Octagon Theatre. The manner in which Una Merkel and John Holland bring their romance to a happy conclusion after a bad start is the basis of this outdoor production. A thrillingly different story of reckless courage and romance is ‘ Gun Smoke,’ which is also on this programme.

EMPIRE

‘ The Lash,’ which closes at the Empire Theatre to-night, is a colourful romance of early California. It was originally written as a novel by the Bartlotts, and is to-day rated a bestseller. Richard Barthelmess plays the role of a dashing young vaqnero who turns bandit in order to combat his people’s oppressors. The cast includes Marion Nixon as Anita, Fred Kohler as the heavy, James Rennie as Howard, Robert Edeson as the elder Don, Arthur Stone, and Mathildc Commit. There is also a delightful stage act by Mr Stan Lawson and his pupils.

ST. JAMES

‘The Virtuous Husband,’ the, sparkling comedy which has enjoyed a successful run at the St. .Tames Theatre during the past week, will have its linal screening to-night. Elliott Nugent, Jean Arthur, and Betty Compson are seen in the leading roles. An entertaining programme of short subjects is also shown.

STRAND

‘ Laughing Sinners,’ with Joan Crawford in the leading role, will be screened at the Strand Theatre for the last time to-night. Like most of Joan Crawford’s pictures, ‘ Laughing Sinners ’ is an intensely dramatic story depicting the fall and regeneration of a cabaret girl. There is also a good supporting programme.

KIND EDWARD

‘ Body and Soul,’ which opened at the King Edward Theatre last night, features Charles Farrell, popular screen idol. Playing opposite him is Elissa Landi, the sensational English screen and Broadway stage star, who is heralded as the film’s prize find of the year. Myrna Loy and Humphrey Bogart are also featured in this drama.
