BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
LAMB CHEAP FOR CHRISTMAS Going by the prices ruling at tha ' Burnside sales to-day, and also the fact that some of the butchers have secured supplies from outside. lamb will bo available to the public this season, at cheaper rates than has been the case for several years. There was a considerably improved tone m the tat cattle market. The sales this morning commenced with the lambs, as the butchers wish to have their purchases killed by Thursday. ■ . yFat Lambs. —It was estimated that there were 2,500 lambs in. It was a splendid yarding of Christmas lambs, there being several trucks of extra heavy primes and a. large vardmg or prime medium weights. Very few; lambs could be classed as plain. At the start the sale prices were easier than the extreme rates realised last week, but there was an improvement later. The top price gained was for a pen from Mr Imrie, Mosgiel, tha amount being 18s 9d. A truck from Mr John Campbell, Momona, sold at 15s 6d, and a truck from Mr W. Craighead, Middlemarch, was turned over, from 16s 3d to 17s 3d. A large quantity sold from 13s .to 15s, and prime lights averaged 11s. Prices would work out at about 41d lb for extra heavies and about 5d lb for til© bulk of the yarding. . Fat Cattle.—The quality in this section was only medium. There were only five or six pens of nice handy cattle in, and considering that there will not be another sale until January, 7, the entry of 150 head proved too small. As is usually the case with a small yarding, prices advanced 30s a head for bullocks and 20s a head fqr cows over the meagre values of last week. The highest price paid was for a consignment from Mr A. Mosgiel, this bringing £l3 15s. Another lot from Mr Nicol, Outram, sold for £lO 17s 6d, and a further entry from Messrs Thompson and Co., Wairouga, sold from £lO to £l2. At this stao-e good ox beef was working out at 28s 6d 1001 b and plain ox beef at 255, but, following an increase m price later, ox beef was worth 30s. Cows were equal to 225. Taken all over the sale was the best conducted fop months.
