STATESMAN AND MOTHER
POLITICAL BROADCAST SPEECH. Sir John Simon, leader of the National Liberal Party in the House of Commons, delighted his mother by the novelty of his greetings on her eightyfifth birthday a few weeks ago. One of the birthday treats to which Mrs Simon had eagerly looked forward was the broadcast talk on tho political situation which her son gave on tho night of her birthday. She listened to the broadcast at her home, and heard Sir John, in the course of his talk, say: “ Tho recovery of British credit' depends on all of us—from tho young man entering upon life and exercising the franchise for the first time to the old lady celebrating, it may be, her eightyfifth birthday as she sits in her chair by the fire.” A close friend of tho family said ; “ You can imagine how Airs Simon’s face Jit up at those words, which came as a complete surprise. There is a wonderful relationship between Sir John and his mother, who understands all the political problems of to-day and is a source of advice to her son,”
