FORTY RESCUERS AT WORK

While forty men worked with crow* bars and planks to free him, a London workman lay for half an hour pinned beneath two slabs of concrete weighing a ton. The man, who escaped witn only slight injuries, was Albert Plain,of Kilburu. With two fellow-workmen he was helping to demolish a building at Golders Green.

The three men were breaking up some concrete ilooring when it split, hurling them to the ground 15ft below. Two others escaped with a few cuts and bruises, but Plain was caught between the two slabs of concrete. A score of men working on the building rushed to his aid, but were unable to extricate him, and telephoned the local fife brigade. Firemen rushed to the spot with jacks and crowbars, but for some tirno they were unable to release him. Finally the forty rescuers, using long planks of wood as levers, raised the top slab sufficiently. to enable Plain to ba slowly drawn out by ambulance men., Plain, who showed no sign of fear dur-< ing his ordeal, was taken to hospital.-
