A. AND P. SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING Mx- H. Turner (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago A. and P. Society, held in tiio board room on Friday night. The Finance Committee’s report recommended that accounts amounting to £1,328 9s 2d be passed for payment. The co littoe also submitted a statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Summer .'how. Owing to the unfortunate weather the result had been far from satisfactory. On the motion of Mr H. G. Campbell, tlu Finance Committee’s report was adopted. The Executive reported that a conference Was held between representatives of th Dunedin Saleyards Company and the society on November 24. The question of the condition of the yards at Burnside and the practicability of effecting an improvement was fully discussed, and it was recognised that the small amount of revenue for accommodating the Bam and Ewe Fair would not justify the Saleyards Company m committing itself to a largo expenditure. It was suggested that tho society might assist in providing extra labour to assist in clearing up tho yards after tho fat stc dc sale. M Crosby Morris assured delegates that his company would be prepared to do anything within reason to assist the society, with whom they have been closely associated for a number of years. Mr Joseph Mosley, in moving the adoption of tho report, quite recognised that they could not expect to receive much consideration from the Saleyards Company, as the amount of revenue from the Bam Fair was small ; however, ho felt sure that tho time was not far distant when bettor arrangements would be made for holding the sale and the Bam and Ewe Fair.

In connection with tho Now Zealand Meat Board’s proposal to offer a perpetual challenge shield for the best district display of lambs from the South Island and three prizes of £15,,£10, and £5 for the best individual lots of lambs, the executive recognised the importance of dealing with the matter, and communicated with the Dunedin stock and station agents and kindred associations throughout Otago, and, recognising that every facility should be given to farmers, has arranged that tho three freezing companies operating in Otago should co-operate with tho society and lend their assistance. It was gratifying to report that the society had been promised the assistance of these companies, and they were also instructing their buyers accordingly. A conference was held between representatives of the stock agents and the society on December 11, and after a very full discussion tho following conditions were unanimously approved : —That entries close on January 16, that'dambs would bo killed at all freezing companies on January 27, and to encourage competition from tho various districts it was decided to offer prizes of £3, £2, and £1 for tho best lambs forwarded from North Otago, South Otago, Tfiieri and Bruce, Tuapeka, Maniototo* and Lakes districts.—After several members had favourably commented on tho competition and the necessity of farmers giving it their support, the executive’s report was adopted Mr H. L. Gibson, railway district traffic manager, wrote thanking the committee for its letter of appreciation of tho department’s services in connection with the Summer Show.

Copies of letters sent to tho various judges who acted at tho Summer Show were approved. A letter received from hte Corriedalo Sheep Society in reference to tho unfair shearing of sheep was. read and referred to the Sheep Committee for report. A list of special donations awarded in connection with the Summer Show was read and noted. A letter was received from the Ashburton A. and P. Society asking the committee to consider the question of having a uniform shearing date for shorn classes at all shows, wliich was referred to the Sheep Committee for report.

Messrs A. Clarke (Hunt road, Anderson’s Bay) and A.- IV. Green (Taicri Moilth) were elected members of tho society.
