FARMERS AND TAXATION.

TO TH* BDITOR Sir, —1 want to let the league know finally that I still maintain that wealthy squatters with an income ot £50,000 to £IOO,OOO are exempt from taxation, as the graduated land tax is wiped off the Statute Book. Who are the league to talk about “ Popoffski's ” prejudiced opinion? I have never been so prejudiced that I refrained from taking the trouble to turn qp ‘ Hansard ’ when page and date were given to me. The league talks of statements of actual fact. Mr Forbes gives it as an actual fact that he believes in equal sacrifice, but ho will have a hard job to convince me, and it will take longer to convince- Mrs Popoffski next Friday when she gets 37s 6d for a fortnight and has to hand back 5s for a levy, while a single woman with an unearned increment of £245 per annum goes Scot free. Of course, the single woman has paid a big sacrifice by denying herself a grousing husband and three children who are not satisfied unless they get something to cat occasionally and also a few clothes. I have not time to keep up this any longer; my statements are definite, the league’s are ambiguous; so finish.— l am, etc., Popoffski. November 24.

[lt would be a pity to end the discussion with a false statement. _ There are no squatters to-day with an income of £50,000 to £IOO,OOO, and if there were thev would pay full income tax. -Ed. E.S.]
