As Master of the Merchant Navy the Prince of Wales had a busy day at Merseyside, visiting numerous places of interest ashore and afloat. He attended a dinner of _ the Master Mariners Company at Liverpool Town Hall, where the Lord Mayor of London, toasting the company, announced that the mariners’ petition to become a livery company of the City of London had received tho approval of the court- aldermen. The Prince of Wales, replying, told the story of an American who had been invited to a livery company’s dinner. H®. was unable to obtain an exact definition of the word livery, but after he sat down for five minutes and had a good look at the menu of twelve succulent courses he turned to a friend and said: “Say, now I know why you call these livery companies.” The Master Mariners Company had been made possible by the generosity of individuals, notably Lord Rothermere, who had contributed another £5,000. ,
