'No resistance was made by the Natives, and Te Whiti, Tohu, and Hiraki, were taken prisoners. •*■ * * We understand that the members of the Great King Street Tabernacle, by a large majority, declined to accept Mr M. W. Green’s resignation of the pastorate. The effect of this 'decision is to retain Mr Green’s services while leaving him free to go 'Wellington, if elected to Parliament, « « • • Anglers should bear in mind that some capital fishing is to be obtained at the Lee Stream. Two fishermen, after a good day’s sport, returned with sixteen fish, weighing 241 b. Next day they caught seven trout, weighing 2431 b, the largest weighing sJlb, and the smallest 21b. The new Synagogue at Christchurch was opened with some ceremony. The Rev. Mr Zachariah, assisted by the Rev. Mr Staveren, of Wellington, officiated. Among the spectators were the Bishops of Wellington and Nelson. f rhe collection amounted to close on £250. » * • • The Melbourne Cup resulted: —Zulu (5.7) 1, The Czar (6.9) 2, Sweetmeat (9.0) '3. At three-quarters of a mile from home Zulu took the lead and was never caught, winning the race by two lengths. He was a complete outsider, and the bookmakers were delighted. The New Zealand horses, Somnus, and Sir Modred, ran well, but failed to get into a place. At a meeting of the Dunedin Presbytery, the following new ministers were introduced by the Rev. Dr Stuart;—The Rev. Dr Macgregor fof New College, Edinburgh), the Rev. Mr Wood, and the Rev. Mr Michie. The Moderator reported that the Rev. John Ryley had accepted the call to Port Chalmers. •
