VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT
IN AID OF SISTERS OF MERCY With the object of raising funds for the Sisters of Mercy centenary fete, which is to be Jield early next month, a'variety entertainment was thoroughly enjoyed in tho Scuth Dunedin Town Hall by a al me nee last night. The firogramme was arranged by the Children of Mary, who will have a stall at'the fete, and'was of -a" diversified character, cinbr.u/ng a variety of features. Conducted by Mr D. Whelan, St. Philomena’s choir opened the first part of the programme with a pleasing selection. This was followed by Mrs D. Carty’s soprano solo, which was well received, as was the tenor horn solo by #ir W. Smith. A contralto solo was next, the vocalist being Miss M. Somerville, while Mr W. Lo Gal played a violin solo. Mr G. H. Hawes’s baritone voice was heard to advantage .in his offering, and Miss E. Houston’s recitation provided yet another change jn the programme. Songs by Miss Tenton and Mr Macdonad brought the qarly portion'of the entertainment to a close.
: Part two was made up of an impromptu speech contest, the speakers being members of the Dunedin Hibernian Debating Clubs. The subjects chosen were humorously treated, and kept the audience in a merry mood. Mrs R. .J. Irvine and Miss K. IWhelau were the accompanists..
