DUNEDIN HIGHLAND RIFLES

EX-MEMBERS’ ASSOCIATION FORMED For tho purpose of forming an association, a meeting of members of the ex-Dunedin Highland Rifles 1 Corps was held in the Y.M.C.A. last night, Mr J. D. Cameron presiding over a fair attendance of members. . .Mr D. Fraser said that, in view of the success of their first function he thought it was a good idea to form nn association. They would have tho ox-mcnibcrs behind them, and the establishment of an association would keep the members in touch with one another. Ho moved that an association of ex-members of the Highland Rifles he formed. Mr G. Waldie seconded tho motion. Captain Dempster said .that he thought the proposal was a good one if it could be successfully' canned out. Mr J. C. Rigby (chairman of the executive) said that while he was in favour of an association being formed it had to lie borne in mind that in a. few years 1 lime there might not bo sufficient members to carry on, and there were no young ones coming forward to fill their places. There was nothing, however, to stop them from having a similar function such as last year's, which would answer the same purpose its an association. .Mr J. s. Nelson said that he was wholly in sympathy with the proposal, and lie preferred to see the younger members taking an active part in the association. Ho had joined th'o corps in 18S6, and resigned in 1896. Mr J. A. Arndt said he thought there would ho sufficient members in Dunedin to carry on an association for some time to como, Mr F. IV. A. Clayton supported the motion, and the Chairman said that he was entirely in sympathy with the movement. When the company wont over to the Territorials there were a number of younger men in it, and as they were still comparatively young they should bo able to take part in the activities of the association. He thought more good could be achieved by tho "formation of a controlling body than merely by having an annual function. Other members also spoke in support of the motion. The motion was carried, and it was decided to call the association the “ Dunedin Highland Rifles F.x-mcm-bers 1 Association.” The following office-bearers wore elected :—Patron. Colonel Stonoliam (Gisborne) ; president. Captain Dempster; vice-presidents—Messrs J. 1). Cameron. K. Melville, and •). T. Gillan ; joint secretaries, Messrs J. A. Armit and F. W. A.
