MONTHLY MEETING The Mayor (Air TV. E. M’Lcan) presided at the monthly meeting of the Afosgiol Borough Council held last night. REPORTS. The Finance Committee reported the receipts for the month to have been £TJB Us lid, and recommended payment of accounts totalling £202 10s 3d. —Adopted. The Works Committee reported that a cut had boon made through the beach of gravel in tho Silvorstream bed at Gow’s Crossing' to divert the How of water from Grievc’s bank; exposed pipes in stream bed at Long Ford bad been covered with stones and grouted with cement. This work had been carried out under No. 5 unemployment scheme. Water patrol had been carried out during tho wet weather. Two communications from Air E. F. Roberts in reference to the Gordon road contract had been submitted to the committee, and tho contents noted. Permission bad been granted to Air TV. Swallow to cut down and remove the tree in the borough yard in Mure street, which was ovorshading his property adjacent. In reference to tho communication from Lodge St. John for a parking area in Park street, the committee recommended that the eastern side of Gordon road for n point 00ft south of the intersection of Park .street to tho railway crossing be declared a parking area for private motor cars. Consideration of R. Al. Gibson’s application tor drainage in Ayr street had been deferred pending a report and plan from tho borough inspector on the matter. Tho foreman of works had boon asked to submit a report to tho next meeting of the com - mitteo' on the condition of all drainage sumps in tho borough. _ Corrosion of galvanised water service pipes: A report from tho Government Analyst had already been rocei.ir! and made public, but further investigation was being instituted by the council. The chairman’s report on works suggested to be put in hand, as under, had been adopted by the committee: —The pipe lino at TVbare Pint to bo opened rip, cut in sections, and the condition of same then to be reported to the council; gravel to be obtained for the borough dump at Tweed street, and also at tho septic tanks; the gravel at present .stored at the tanks to be carted and spread on Carlyle road. Post Office section, Gordon road: Grass to be chipped, stumps removed, and generally tidied up for children’s playground. Bicycles without rear lights; It was decided to ask the police to prosecute all cyclists riding without rear reflectors, and also al! cyclists riding on the footpaths,—Tho report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. A petition was received from tho residents of Forfar street asking for the formation of Forfar street between Tay and Clyde streets, and a culvert across Dyo Creek.—Referred to the Works Committee for report. The Alount Eden Chamber of Commerco forwarded copy of a resolution to be forwarded to every member of both Houses of Parliament pointing out the economic necessity for a reduction of at least li per cent, on all internal interest on Government bonds, local body debentures, and private mortgages.—lt was decided (o support the resolution. The Alilton District Unemployment, Committee forwarded copy of resolution in regard to the employment of unemployed on improving roads already in existence in settled districts in preference to roads to tourist resorts. —It was resolved to support the resolution. Air F. R. Hall, Ayr street, wrote asking for an explanation as to water rate charged upon his property, and also requesting that (lie potholes in Ayr street between Argylo street and tho borough boundary be attended to as soon as possible.—Referred to tho committees governing cadi request for their consideration. Air T. A. Milner wrote asking for a rebate of sanitary foe on house, King street, vacant since March 8 last.—Referred to the Finance Committee. Air E. Fletcher Roberts wrote regarding the' tar-sealing contract of Gordon road. —Received. Tho Treasury, Wellington, forwarded Treasury voucher for £ICS Iss. being Government subsidy for the year .11)3031. —Received. GENERAL. A .councillor asked about a street crossing that had been put in by a business firm. —The Inspector explained that this bad boon done to bis satisfaction. —In the discussion which followed three other crossings wore mentioned, which were not very satisfactory jobs.— A decision had boon arrived at that all crossings should be carried out by the borough stall’, but this had been overlooked. —It was resolved to have these crossings inspected, with a view to their proper erection, and any further attempts to erect crossings privately be reported to the council. In connection with an iron shod at tho rear of business premises in Gordon road that had been permitted to remain during the pleasure of the council. it was resolved to write to the parties concerned.
