DEATH SENTENCE QUASHED
APPELLANT TO PAY £1,526
It has been revealed that it cost, Mr William Herbert Wallace, tho Liverpool insurance agent, £1,526 11s 6d—his entire life savings—to obtain the quashing of the conviction on the charge of wife murder.
Mr Wallace's death sentence was recently quashed by tho Court of Criminal Appeal, and he had lo pay all tho costs. His follow-worker.- ia the insurance staff union decided to reimburse him. Mr W. T, Crown, of the union, stated a few weeks ago tint so far £1,150 had been subscribed leaving nearly £4OO to bo found, but the union guaranteed the whole amount.
Tho matter of compensation iva. raised in the House of Commons, when (ho Attor-ney-General announced that tho law said that no costs should bo allowed at the determination of an appeal in the Criminal Court. »
