HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
A meeting of the committee of the above society was held last evening, tho president (Mr 6. A. Skene), oo cupying the chair. Mr Trevena reported that a meeting of local members of the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand had been held to make arrangements for the various competitions which were to bo held at tho spring show of the Dunedin Society. It was recommended that the Society accept all the trophies for competition. These comprise the British Raisers’ Challenge Cup, the Australian Daffodil Growers’ Challenge Trophv, the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s Challenge Cup, the Oamarn Cup, the Rhodes Silver Challenge Cup, and New Zealand Seedling Challenge Trophy. It was recommended that the following additional classes be added:—Three seedlings raised by exhibitor, one stem of’ each; twelve varieties, three of each; nine varieties, one of each; and six varieties, one of each, the prizes for thses classes to be National Daffodil Society medals. The recommendations were adopted. . The trophy presented some years ago by Mr E. R. Burton for the distr.ct and firms’ competition having been voa outright, Mr Burton forwarded anot :er cup tor this competition. Jt was esolved to thank Mr Burton for .:i3 generous donation. Trophies have I - a donated by Mr E. Oswald Reilly (-or narcissi). Messrs Moncreitf and Stewart; (narcissi), Messrs Skenes Ltd. (roses), Mr J. Fletcher (gladioli). It was decided to reduce the numbe* of varieties for the open champior- ;p in narcissi from fifty to thirty-six. lie fine collection of native plants staged at the jubilee show having caused a, greater interest in native flora, sev, rat competitions for these have been included in the schedule.
