CURTAILMENT OF FUNDS WORK HAY CEASE EARLIER THIS WEEK As the Unemployment Board has curtailed the amount required lor employment of all eligible men under scheme No. 5, it may bo necessary towards the end of this week to cease operations before tho allotted tune has been completed. Tbo exact position cannot' bo ascertained at tbo moment because it is impossible to anticipate the exact number of men wiio will fail to report for work. As it is desired to expend the whole of tho amount allocated, it lias been arranged that it the funds becomo exhausted during Friday then work must necessarily cease. MEETING AT ST. KIIDA The third weekly meeting of the St Kilda Unemployed and Relief Workers’ Association was held in the small council hall last night, when there was a fair representative gathering. The plight of the single men who have been laid idle for the past fortnight, owing to the pending shortage of work in the borough, was again discussed, and it was decided to approach the council on the matter. The secretary has already wired the lion. \V. B. Taverner explaining that the men were becoming restless owing to the fact that, although receiving no work, they were still compelled by law to pay the levy, which they considered an injustice. It was decided to scud a deputation to the Mayor of Dunedin to ascertain if he would be prepared after the forthcoming concert to take all funds and goods raised by them and grant relief to the distressed workers of the borough. The concert will take place on August 12. WORK OH THE TAIERi At the meeting of the Taieri River Trust vesterday, on the motion of Cr Kempsliell, the following drains were recommended for attention :—Cleaning, Messrs James, Marshall, and Cameron; deepening, Poplar drain and Messrs Wilson, Richards, and R. Shennan; lowering pipes in drains— Messrs Carrutliors, Mathcson, and Miller; pipes to bo inserted at Mr Moynihan’s; clean the Berwick drain from the river right up through tho township. It was decided to do the main drain first, and the other drains by relief work as the Works Committee thought lit. The clerk reported on the work carried out by the local Unemployment Committee, and deluded the working of the scheme as it affected the trust at present. AT PBRT CHALMERS An impression has gained currency in the Sawyers Bay cl strict to the effect that the Fort Chalmers unemployment centre claims in its weekly estimate for the men who arc on the register at Fort Chalmers, but who reside beyond flic borough boundaries. Consequently the allocation granted is then .sufficient to provide employment for all Fort Chalmers men. That impression is not correct, in that the average mini her of men not estimated for each week is forty-four. That number reside beyond the borough, and

disposes of the assumption that allocations lor non-residents aro being obtained in Port Chalmers. For Port Chalmers the sum of _ £2lO is allocated this week, and a similar allocation made for next week. The estimated expenditure, however, for this week amounted to £3(18, and for next week £390.
