A NEW RECLAMATION AREA

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Mr Ansoll’s proposal to reclaim the Waitati Flats for farming* purposes was a good idea, and one which might be used to better advantage in this harbour. What about reclaiming the area between Portobello and Quarantine Island? It would make ideal holdings, and be handy to the city. All that is required is to run a wall across from the hatchery to Quarantine Island. That is a very short distance. The material for the wall is easily obtainable from either end, and it would provide a year’s work for a large number of unemployed. The advantages which would follow are patent to everyone who knows the locality; also it would save the dredging costs of carrying spoil outside the Hoads.—l am, etc., Mem; Land. August d.
