OTAGO BOARD'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Hospital Board last night was attended by the following members: —Messrs W. It. S. Knight (chairman), D. M‘Lcnnau, J. W. Dove, J. W. Scnrr, G. Gallaway, A. F. Qnelcb, W. B. Morgan, Dr VV. Newiands, Mrs Marshall Macdonald, Mrs Walter Boss, and Miss Bnnciman. GENERAL. The Now Zealand Hospital Boards’ Association advised that the board’s levy for the current year had been fixed at £.‘)l. —Air Gallaway: A waste of money. If there is any big thing on the boards do not hang together.—The letter was received. The Batchelor Hospital Guild forwarded a report of its work and a donation of £l7-9s 6d. The guild assured (he board of its desire to help the board, and would give its support so long as the Batchelor Hospital was established. The application of-Marjorie G. Tweed lor enrolment as a massage student was received. RADIUM FOR SOUTHLAND. Dr. C. C. Anderson (Invercargill) wj-otc asking .for the use of radium for treatment of a malignant growth on the face of a patient who was unable to travel to Dunedin. The Southland Board advised that it was holding over the proposal of the Otago Board to loan radium for the use of Southland practitioners, provided the Southland Board accepted responsibility. Mr Scnrr said Dr Anderson’s request raised a humanitarian question. If the radium would do the patient good the board should not stand in tho way of its use, so long as the board was given security. , Air Qnelcb supported Mr Scnrr. The Chairman said a difficulty would arise if tho Southland Board refused to accept responsibility. Air Dove: This is a private case. Mr Gallaway said tho board should allow Dr Anderson the vise of the radium on this occasion, but a decision on the proposal, now before the Southland Board should be reached before further assistance was given. Tho request was granted, the board to bo secured against loss of the radium. APPOINTAIENTS. The appointment of Mr L. Faigan as chairman was advised by tho Roxburgh Hospital Committee. Tho Minister of Health’s approval of the appointment of Sister A. M. Glynes as matron of tho Pleasant Valley Sanatorium was received. - HOSPITAL STATISTICS. Dr James Thomson (medical superintendent) reported that 621 in-patients were treated during June, JIS being admitted during tho month. The total of discharges or deaths during the month was 115-1. Tho number of operations carried out was 188, seventyseven being major operations. HOUSE STEWARD VACANCY. The sub-committee consisting of the chairmen of the various committees set up to consider tho question of filling the vacancy caused by tho retirement of Air F. .1. Silvius from the position of house steward at the Dunedin Hospital recommended that applications bo invited for the position at a salary commencing at £260 per annum, and that a sub-committee consisting dr Messrs Knight and Alorgan and Dr Newiands define the duties of the office. The Chairman said tho committee was agreed that there! should bo no radical alteration of the relations between the steward and the controller of stores. Airs Alacdonald, objected to the subcommittee acting in the matter. Questions wore referred to sub-committees, and members wore never given the promised opportunities of further discussing the points. Tho recommendation was adopted, but Airs Alacdonald later gave notice to move at tho next meeting of the board of a house steward at the Dunedin Hospital he considered and defined by the lull Hospital Committee.”
