The expression, “Ho has gone' to Davy Jones’s locker,*’ - simply means that ho has gone to the bottpm of. tho sea. It means tho receptacle or chest of tho spirit of the prophet Jonah. “Jones” is tho sailors’ corruption of “ Jonah.” “ Davy ” is said to come from the West India Negro’s word “ duffy,” mfeaning devil or evil spirit. “ Davy .Tones ” is simply “ Duffy ” or “ Devil Jonah.” Ho is tho evil spirit of the sen, just as Neptune is the God of the Sea. A “ locker,” in sailors’ parlance, means any receptacle, largo, or small, in which * private stores are kept.
