Tho first commission for pressing seamen to man tho warships of the navy was issued in 1355. A Statute of Richard 11m in L's7B fipcaks ol it as a practice well-known. Pressing, either for land or aon service, was declared by the Parliament of IG4I to ho illegal, hub it was extensively practised after that date.
