THE HARBOUR BOARD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Mr Stevenson’s information in his letter in your issue of the 7th inat., wherein ho discussed the rights and privileges of the payers of duos on goods and the payors of dues on .ships, might be news to some people, but surely ho does not seriously consider it a logical, or elucidating reply to Mr Cameron’s just complaint against the admitted and flagrant interfering methods adopted by the local United Party authorities, in thrusting the nomination of a man with no public record on to the Government for appointment to this important and much-sought-after public position on the Otago Harbour Board, without in any way paying duo regard to the wishes of tho three local important commercial bodies vitally concerned, on whoso behalf Mr Cameron uttered hia logical protest. If Mr Stevenson considers bis letter had any logical bearing upon Mr Cameron’s direct complaint, then bis sense of logic is easily satisfied. Mis letter served a useful .camouflaging purpose, but otherwise bad no direct bearing upon tho real ouestion at issue—viz., the undue and unnecessary interference

of the local branch of the dominant political parly in an appointment which did not directly concern them. Kvon if Air Cameron’s complaint did offend the local supporters of the Government on account of his wellknown Reform leanings, it docs not actually’ detract from the principle involved in his complaint. His contention that the appointment was wrongly made stilt stands goods, and has not been refuted.—l am, etc.. li.UillOUJi. January 9.
