TJio “ Pilgrimage of Grace ” was an insurrection which arose in the north of England with the object of opposing the dissolution of the monasteries. The movement, commenced in Lincolnshire in September, 1336, was suppressed in October, but was soon after revived in Yorkshire. It was headed by Askeand other gentlemen, and joined by priests and 40,000 men, chiefly of York, Durham, and Lancashire. They took Hull and York, with smaller towns. The Duke of Norfolk marched against them, and, by making terms, dispersed them. Early in 1537 they again took the field, but they were promptly suppressed, and the leaders, among whom were several abbots, were executed.
