RUN OVER BY TRUCKS.
While Hugh George Smith, a tally clerk in the employ of tho New Zealand Shipping Company, was tallying cargo out of tho steamer Northumberland at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon, ho was knocked under some trucks which were being shunted along the Bowen street pier, the wheels of one of trucks passing over his legs. Tho injured man was attended to by Dr Roy, and was conveyed to the Dunedin Hospital, where it was found necessary to amputate his right leg below the knee. Ho ■has been placed on tho dangerously ill list, but his condition showed a slight improvement this afternoon.
