KARITANE NOTES
(Contributed.) The weather through the Christmas and New Year holidays has been all that could be desired, and battling in the surf has boon the popular rocreation. Speed-boating and yachting in the estuary June also been largely indulged in by the youths, while thookle--men have enjoyed good fishing with net. spear, and line All the summer eoltages. are occupied. and newcomers are already inquiring for vacant sections with a view to building later. Probably owing to the somewhat difficult year very few cottages have been erected of late, though Air James Duncan, of Dunedin, has been utilising his summer holiday.*, providing himself with a cottage. New visitors to the district include Messrs Stuart Cameron, Diekison Kettle. Pratt, Linnb, B-ichards, Abe). J. Wheeler, S. Arthur, Hobson, ami Dr Jenkins, who is occupying his tine new summer residence for the tirsf time The Amenities Society’s New Year dance was a pronounced success, the hall having been specially dccoratd for the occasion, and the society’s funds bene lit ted considerable. Tl 10 need of footpaths along Ihe main road is receiving the attention of the Amenities Society, and it is hoped to secure the support of the County Conn cil in the carrying out of this work. The society proposes to spend a considerable sum on the necessary formalion work , and it is confidently anticipated that the County Council mav .secure a. substantial subsidy from the Unemployment. Board, thus helping to relieve ilm local unemployment posi tion, besides providing a greatly-needed benefit for the. local community. It is nmlcrdtood that the matter of providing a. retaining wall at the entrance of the estuary to increase the tidal scour, with a view to deepening the river entrance, is having the attention of the authorities. Though the expense would be considerable, the fishermen would appreciate the fact that they could negotiate the bar at all times with safety. A public notice board is required in the district, where all notices of .meetings and matters of public interest could be put up for the convenience of lesidents and visitors. The Amenities Society is approaching the County Council asking that the sliced limit for motor ears and buses he icstrieted within certain areas on the main road. This reform is urgently required. especially during the summer holidays. During his long residence at Karitane that staunch enthusiast Sir Trulnking saw the need of tree-plan ting, and the district owes much to him for some of the fine trees and shrubs that make this seaside such a beauty snot. . He planted trees from the township rigid to Fnkeieniki, but vandalism has caused the destruction of the last of the silver beeches which beautified Clio long entrance to the township., it is hard to understand why pormissioh was given to destroy these line trees and why the people were not considered before the axe was ruthlessly applied by unthinking persons, who apparently sec no beauty in trees. Such acts of vandalism should not bo permitted, .and it is hoped that the local Amenities Society will have something to say in the matter. i
