MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago A. and P. Society was hold in the board room yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs James Begg (president, in the chair), Arthur Johnson, J. W. Blair, F. J. Conn, I). Andrew, James Gow, T. J. Gawn, John Young, George Boss, H. Turner, JR. T. Kirk, S. Bowman, A. Mackay, E. M. North, W. O. M‘Kellar, and John Hellyer. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £1,506 5s sd, as detailed in the accounts register, ho passed for payment.—On the motion of Mi- H. Turner the Finance Committee’s report was adopted. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the Summer Show was submitted, and showed a serious loss. A report was received from the secretary in connection with the position, and after the matter was-fully discussed it was decided to call a special meeting of the committee in February for the purpose of going fully' into the position and deciding what should be done when the society had to contend with unfavourable weather. The Executive reported that arrange ments had been made_ to carry out the necessary repairs required in connection with the improvements to the house at Tahuna Park, which was approved. The suggestion to improve the loose boxes and to provide for any additional boxes that might be required by those attending the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s events was held over. The question of erecting a building* for the purpose of providing better accommodation in connection with the motorists using t’ park as a motor camping area was left to the executive to make the final arrangements. A letter was received from the Bailways District Traffic Manager thanking [ the committee for its letter of appreciation. . , r , 1T , A letter was received from Mrs Watson Shennan. High street, advising that she desired that the silver challenge cup be known as the “ Watson Shennan Memorial Cup,’,’ to be held each year bv the competitor gaining the most points in the open wool classing section at the Winter Show, and also that the successful competitor would receive a miniature cup, suitably engraved, to be retained by him. —The cup_ was accepted, and the secretary was instructed to thank Mrs Shennan for her generous support and interest. On the recommendation or Mr Harry Allan, of Milburn, Mr James Power, of Morningtou, was appointed a member of the Home Industries Sub-committee in place of Mr Noble, who found it inconvenient to act. A list of the following insurances was submitted and approved Crawford street building, £10,000; grand stand, £2 000; dwelling house, £600; cattle pens and horseboxes, £750; office and furniture, £600; show fittings, £400; and electric light Citings, £l5O. The Chairman reported that a suggestion had been received that a poster competition should bo run in connection with the Winter Show. Letters were received from tbo priucipul of "tlie King Edward Technical College and the secretary of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Society, and were referred to the sub-committco appointed to carry out the competition. Mr John W. P*. Vickery, of Invercargill, wrote returning the cheque ho had received from tlie society towards the expenses ho incurred in acting as one of tlio judges, and he left it in.the hands of the committee to decide whether the amount should be placed to the credit of making him a member for the following year. Mr Joseph Brooks, of Brookside, wrote enclosing a cheque tor £2 5s as a donation to the society’s funds owing the loss which was incurred due to bad weather. Mr William Swale, of Limehills, wrote enclosing his cheque for £4 4s received from the society towards the expenses he incurred in acting as one of the judges as a donation to the society’s funds. Mr Swale suggested that some of the country members should, take more interest in the fat sheep and cattle classes. Mr W. A Baxter, of Pomahaka, wrote returning the society’s cheque sent him for the expenses he incurred in acting as one of the judges, as he was quite willing to give his services free from payment. The Chairman stated that it was very gratifying that these judges should not only have successfully carried out thenduties under unfavourable conditions, but were so generously assisting the society, and the secretary was instmeted to send tliem & letter of thanks “iTTHL7.ndM r PelcrirFad. yen wrote tendering their, resignations ns members of the society, which weie accepted with regret. The Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Society wrote advising that at its monthly meeting of committee a lengthy discussion had taken place on the present economic crisis, and the following resolution had been passed:— •‘‘That this committee urges the Government to—(1) reduce adequately the salaries of all members of Parliament and Government officials from Cabinet Ministers downwards; (2) cease paying award rates of wages on relief works; (J) suspend or abolish the Arbitration Court and its awards; (4) stop the construction of railways that have no prospect of paying.”—The committee endorsed these resolutions. On the motion of Mr David Andrew it was decided that tho Agricultural Department he asked to send an officer to inspect all stock entered for sale by the society at the annual ram and ewe fair, in eider to ensure that they had been properly dipped and free from disease. and that those conditions be advertised. The annual ram and ewe fair was fixed for Thursday, March 26, 1931, The Dunedin Chamber of Commerce wrote full particulars in connection with . tho proposed calendar reform, which the committee supported. On the motion of the president tho following resolution was passed:— ‘‘ That this meeting places on record its thanks to all judges for tho manner in which they carried out their duties on tho People’s Day of the show, and expresses its high appreciation to all exhibitors who entered the ring and enabled the committee to carry out its programme under very unfavourable weather conditions.” At the close of tho meeting Mr James Gow. on behalf of the Taieri members, asked tho committee to accept the photograph of the late Mr John Nimmo. Mr Gow pointed out that Mr Nimmo had been a member of the committee for many years and had taken an active part in all matters pertaining to the _ society’s operations and in the promotion and extension of agricultural and pastoral interests. Mr Gow considered that the services of Mr Nimmo had not been equalled by any other member of tho and it gave him much pleasure in asking the committee to accept his photograph.— Mr Bogg. on behalf .of tho society, accepted Mr Nimmo’s photograph, and said he would see that it was hung in the board room along with those of other prominent and respected members. He thanked tho Taieri members for honouring Mr Nimmo’s valuable services.
