RELIEF RECIPIENT'S STATEMENTS REFUTED A statement issued from the mayor’s relief depot in Dowling street put a very different complexion on what was said by a man who was a member of a deputation to the mayor this morning. This man, who said he had a wife and three children, stated that when he called at tho depot this morning he received half a loaf, 2]lb of meat, and ,»lb of butter for a week’s supply. Tho records at the relief depot show that this morning the man in question was provided with the following supplies;— jib tea, 41b sugar, Hb butter, half a loaf, 21b sago, soap, 4lb flour, 2 candles, Jib cocoa, jib baking powder, tin of golden syrup. inquiries were also made whether ho had any children, tho lady in charge ascertaining that ho had a girl of eight years of age and two boys aged six and four respectively. A note was taken of this lact because it was intended to prepare three Christmas stockings for the children. The records further show that on December 12 tho same man received lb tea. 41b sugar, 41b flour, 4lb baking powder, jam, fish, half a loaf, soap, Mb butter, Jib salt, two candles, 51b potatoes, 21b sago. It was further learned that no complaints at all were ihado by any of the recipients of relief this morning and that they were informed that there would bo a supply of meat on Tuesday to see them over Christmas. The public should appreciate what is being done by the ladies at the rebel depot when it is stated that to-day they started distributing relief at 9 o’clock and did not finish till ten minutes to J to go to lunch.
