SWIMMING
INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR TEAM SELECTED Last night’s meeting of tlio Otago Swimming Centre wms attended by Messrs J. L. M‘lndoe (in the chair), E. G. James, A. Findlay, W. Auckland, D. Thomson, V. Fletcher, B, Kerr, J. Lewis, 1. Turnbull, H. D. Gillies, and A. Greig. The executive put forward the following team to represent Otago at the New Zealand intermediate and junior swimming championships at Ashburton on January 30 and 31:— Intermediate Boys.—R. Geddcs (Kiwi), 100yds, 220yds, and 440yds free style, and 100yds breast stroke; V. Newall (Dunedin), 100yds, 220yds, and 440yds. Intermediate Girls.—Miss M. Mathieson (Dunedin), 100yds and 220yds free style, and 75yds breast stroke. Miss Matliieson is tlio title holder in each of these events. Intermediate Boys’ Dive.—R. M'Lay (Dunedin) and P. E. Matliieson (Kiw r i). M‘Lay is the title holder. Junior Boys.—W. Jarvis (Dunedin)', 100yds and 220yds free style, and 75yds breast stroke; S. Jarvis (Dunedin), 100yds and 220yds. Junior Girls.—Miss W. Newall (Duuodin), 50yds and 100yds; Miss M. Pockson (Dunedin), 50yds, 100yds. and 75yds breast stroke. It was resolved that the senior section of the Otago championship be held on Thursday, February 12, and the Bait Cup Harbour Race on Saturday, February 14. The Kiwi Swimming Club’s application for permission to stage the 220yds men’s championship at its carnival was approved. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr A. Greig for liis donation to the centre funds. Tlio Secretary of _ the New Zealand Council wrote advising that the Dunedin Training College Swimming and Life Saving Club had been affiliated. Advice was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Swimming Council that the International Swimming Federation had ruled that beach patrols were professionals, and that as the federation would not meet again until 1931 it was extremely doubtful if beach patrols could be classed as amateurs in the meantime.—Received.
