SCHOOL COMMITTEES
ASSOCIATION'S QUARTERLY MEETING The quarterly meeting of the School Committees* Association of Otago was held on Thursday evening in the board room of t tho Education Office, Moray place. A letter from tho North-east Harbour School Committee in reference to, a new. school for the district was unanimously supported. Conditions obtaining in that district were not all that could bo desired. Tho roll number was 159, and it was found necessary to uso a vacant shop three-quarters of a milo away from the present school to assist in accommodating tho pupils. The proposed visit of tho Minister of Education was discussed, and th.o executive decided to invito all school committeemen to bo present. Mr Atraoro had promised to address a meeting under tho auspices of the association. It was tho opinion of the association that the Recess Committee’s report on education was not acceptable in its entirety. Much valuable information would no doubt be, imparted by tho Minister. Tho Federation of South Island School Committee Associations will meet in Dunedin in March next, and it was decided to leave it to tho Executive Committee to arrange suitable functions in honour of the visitors. Tho question of altering tho system of appointment of teachers was discussed, but it was felt that discussion on that question should be held over until the report of the Recess Committee was being dealt with. In regard to tho offer of the Unemployment Board to pay £2 for £1 subsidy to school committees, it was decided to_ advise committees to put in their claims for subsidies on any work for which money was being raised locally. ■ It was felt that the association was of sufficient importance to warrant a room being sought in which important documents could be perused by committeemen at any time. Tho_ secretary was instructed to make inquiries, and the executive to arrange, it possible, for a meeting room. Delegates from several country committees expressed their pleasure and thanks for tho work being done by tile association. i
