ST. CLAIR NEEDS.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir,—Being a resident of St. Clair for the last forty years and noting the various changes for tho good of the district, 1 would like to voice ray opinion on what I reckon will bo a great drawback to the district in a few months to come, meaning tho quarry which the Corporation opened at the second beach. It may bo a good asset to the Corporation at present, but could not it do something to the waste material that is thrown into the sea, and getting gradually washed up on to tho St. Clair Beach? Ik not this gravel, etc., of some uso to citizens for filling up purposes? I seo by tho daily papers that tho Corporation paid a sum of money to have the baths cleared of these stones, and also have a 4ft wall erected to prevent these stones from coming in. At every high tide the stones still come into the baths, over the top of the wall. It seems to me to bo a case of shutting the gate after the horse is out, and it will finally cost* our city fathers hundreds of pounds to carry on as they are doing. Any person who takes a walk along St. Clair Beach can see tho stones, which have been deposited there by the high tides, and will probably in time spoil one of the finest beaches in New Zealand. Hoping the St. Clair Improvement Society or some other such body will take this important matter up before it is too late, —I am, etc., Seagull. October 11.
