The Somerset Loungo presented a gay sight on Saturday night when the Calder Mackay Co. .held its first birthday parly, tho firm in this way expressing its appreciation, of the valuable service rendered by tho staff durihg tho past year. _ The guests were received by Mrs Fernie, who .carried a sheaf of pansies, presented by tho girls of tho staff. Tho manager (Mr Fernie) expressed the pleasure of all at the pr-e.sence of tho general manager, Mr 'Mackay. In reply to tho toast of the company, Mr Mackay said that ’ the - past year had been a very successful one, and tho firm could look forward with confidence to tho future. Ho concluded by conveying greetings from tho staff of the. Christchurch office. In proposing tho toast of “Calder Mackay Co., Dunedin,” Mr Mackay expressed the appreciation of tho directors of the work of tho manager. The confidence reposed in him had been fully justified, and under his management there was no reason why 1(5.31 should not be a record year. In reply Mr Fernie paid tribute to' tho loyalty and co-operation of tho. staff. Throughout the year all had given of their best, and the success achieved was in no small measure due to their combined _ efforts.
