HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS

FAREWELL TO MR M'NAUGHTON On Saturday evening, in tlio Somerset Lounge, ’ a pleasant valedictory social was tendered to Mr A. T. M'Naughton, who has lormniaster of the Upper Fifth Form at. Otago Boys 3 High School since 1924. He will leave shortly for a three years’ trip to America and England lor the study of religious education and allied subjects, aim over fifty ex-pupils of Upper V. assembled to do honour to their old master. The gathering, as tho Chairman remarked, was perhaps singular in New Zealand, as those present represented only one form during tho years in which Mr M'Naughton was form-master, and it showed .-in what great respect he was hold by his old pupils, as there was not a single year in the period which was not representation. Tho function was presided over by Mr J. G. Warrington, and the present school was presented by tho rector (Mr W. J. Morrell). After the Loyal Toast had been honoured a pianoforte solo was given by Mr Morrell, after which Mr A. C. Holden proposed the toast of “The School” and one of the school songs was sung. This toast was replied to by tho rector. Vocal and elocutionary items followed, and Mr J. S. Somerville proposed the toast of “ The Form-master,”, and presented Mr M'Naughton with an engraved wrist watch as a token of the esteem in which ho was held by his former pupils. In his reply, Mr 'M'Naughton thanked all 1 those present, and, while' expressing deep regret at leaving Dunedin, said that 'ho looked forward with anticipation to his coming adventures. It gavo him great pleasure to meet his old pupils again, and ho would always remember this function with gratitude. During the evening items were given by Messrs L. F. Molfer, W. G. do Clive Lowe, and G. E. Moloney, as well as Mr M'Naughton himself and Mr W. ]? ufi’oll, a member of the form in 1922 Messrs E. S. M‘Far lane and W. Du (fell sang a duet, and Mr M'Farhme’s services as accompanist were much appreciated. A very successful function was concluded bj 7 ‘ Anld Lang Syne,’ and a spirited rendering of the school haka.
