BALCLUTHA, November 30.

Bowling.—After a lapse of three weeks, on account of bad weather, the South Otago howling fixtures wore resumed on Saturday. On the Bak-lntha green the local club met three rinks from Stirling Club under the most favourable conditions, tho result being a very enjoyable afternoon’s play. Tho fjrcen was in splendid order, and the mine club extended tho usual hospitality to the visitors. Tho result was a win for the home team by 27 points, two rinks being up and one down. One rink (Finn’s) had a big win, the opposition rink only scoring on four ends. Scores (Balclutlia names first): Cessford, O’Hara, Culbert, Armstrong 15, Hawker, Little, Duncan, Jefferson 25; Sim, Pritchard, Hayward, Finn -Id, Cunningham, Sinclair, Smith, Walls, sen. 5; Dawson, Smart, Poynter, Riach ID, Anderson, Walls, jun.. Henderson, Dotting 33. Totals: Balclutlia 70, Stirling 43. At Owaka two rinks from each of tho Benhnr and Waropa Clubs played tho local club, and the result was a win for tho homo team in each section. Benhar went down by 7 points and Warepa by ll points. The green was in good order, and tho visitors were hospitably entertained. Tennis.—Tho Kaitangata and Balclutha A teams met on the Balclutlia courts under conditions that were perfect, and tho result was a very enjoyable afternoon’s play. The match ended in a win for tho visitors by 12 sets (11G games) to 4 sets (73 games). Scores (Kaitangata names first): Men’s singles—Scott heat Wilson 0-7, Clemens boat Kayo 0-3, Andrews heat Guest 9-1, Beadle beat Betting 0-2. Ladies’ singles—Mrs O’Fee lost to Miss Noble 5-G, Miss Kyle lost to Mrs Poynter 2-6, Mrs Reid beat Miss Matheson 6-5, Mis M'Auley heat Miss Kirby 6-1. Men’s doubles—Scott and Clemens beat Wilson ami Kayo 0-5, Andrews ami Beadle beat Guest and Betting 0-5. Ladies’ doubles—Mcsclames O’Fee and APAulcy beat Noble and Mrs Poynter 0-4, Miss Kyle and Mrs Reid beat 31 issos Matheson and Kirby 6-0. Combined doubles—Scott and Mrs Reid lost to Wilson and Miss Noble j 3-9, Clemens and Mrs O’Fec lost to Kayo and Mrs Poynter 7-9, Andrews and Miss Kylo beat Guest, and Miss Matheson 9-0, Beadle and Airs M'Aulcy beat Miss Kirby 9-4. The Balclutlia B team went to Clinton and had a good win by 9 sets (OS games) to' 6 sets (78 games). Cricket.—The Clutha seniors travelled to Waiwera and received a rather severe boating. Clutha made 111, the top scorers being: O’Sullivan 31, Cockerill 30, Gallagher 21, Moffat 11; Nicol (four for 28) and Edwards (three for 9) were Waiwera’s best howlers. Waiwera made 232 for tho loss of eight wickets, and “ declared.” Edwards went very near the century, making 93. L. Dunn made 35, 11. Dunn 17. Nieo! 29. Kean 10, Rowley not out 25. O’Sullivan (four for 29) and Cockerill (two for 19) were the host of Clutha’s hatch of seven bowlers tried. Tho Clutha juniors had a very meritorious win over Milton A, at Baiclutha. The visitors hatted first and made 132, top scorers being Ryan (57). Olver (19), Devanney (18), and “extras” (14). Lennox (five for 48) was in good form with the ball, while Kitto (four for 33) also bowled well. Tho Clutha boys nearly all reached double figures. Stewart made 76 (including twelve 4's), Lennox made 45, Henry 31, Lowe 16, Kitto and Stephens 12 each, tho total of tho side being 211—99 more than their opponents. The most successful Milton- howlers were Hoads (two for 47), Devanney (three for 57), and Coomhc (two for 19). Shows.—The gate at the Baiclutha Show last week was £224 18s, tho second highest on record, and about £l4 less than last year. The entries were exceptionally good, while tho quality, particularly in the light horse section was outstanding. For tho Owaka show this week the entries are also well ahead of last year, totalling as they do 379, as against 307 last year. "Horses show a, slight decrease, but all other sections arc up, particularly sheep, cattle, and baking. Given fine weather the society should have a very successful show. Farmers’ Union.—At a meeting of the Clutha branch last night a resolution of sympathy with tho relatives of the late Mr J. C. Anderson was carried in silence, several members paying a tribute to the interest tbe late Air Anderson bad taken in the affairs of the union. Other resolutions carried were:—“That in view of the restrictions placed on traffic crossing the Balclutba bridge tbe Main Highways Board be asked to proceed with the erection of a new bridge without delay, as the restrictions were unbearable and tho result would have an adverse effect on the district; “ that Producers Ltd. bo asked to go into the question of duties on American farm machinery, particularly binders and 'diggers” (it was pointed out that American machinery of this Mass was the best and the duty of 35 to 40 per cent, was an injustice); “ that the Government be asked to take steps to reduce tho interest in its lending departments and extend the time of repayment; that the Government he again asked to consider tho introduction of a grading system for wool, so tjmt it could bo sold on the same basis as cheese, butter, and oilier products from the dominion; that the Minister of Lands be written to and asked to consider the farm settlement scheme which was so successful thirty or so years ago as a moans of relieving unemployment.” Tho mover said that there were thousands of acres on the West Const which could be utilised in this direction, and on which settlers could be placed and make a living for themselves.

SOUTH OTAGO FIRE BRIGADES. COMPETITIONS AT LAWRENCE. Tlic annual competitions for tlio Watts Cup were held at Lawrence yesterday. Tlio wea Llier was excellent, and tlicrc was a, good attendance of the public. This year five South Otago brigades wore represented. Tapanui having come into the competition. The result was that Milton brigade annexed the tropy, Balelutha brigade (holders) being runners-up. The. competitions proved very interesting, and some excellent work was seen. The officials for the day were:—Timekeepers—Messrs Kerr (Milton), McDonald (Tapaumi), R. Cox (Lawrence). 0. J. Wood (Bal cluthn) ; starter, Air W. Christie (Lawrence) ; judges, Messrs J. Powley, J. Bowie (Milton), D. Stewart (Lawrence), C. Strong (Tapanui). The results were:— Five-men Event.—Milton A (Gibb, Burleigh, Andrews, Hansen, Milligan), 24sec, T; Balelutha B (Gold. Stewart, Boylan, Munro, Dimmock) 25sec, 2; Balelutha A (Hughes, Cook, Frye, Jardine, Dimmock), 25 2-ssec v 3. Also ran; Tapanui A, blow out; Kaitangata A, 49 l-ssoc; Milton B, 29sec; Lawrence A, 25 4-ssce. The winners in this event received gold medals, and the second team silver medals. Three-men Event.—Milton A (Gibb, Hanson, Milligan). 20 3-sscc, I ; Milton B (Burleigh, Andrews, Baker) and Lawrence A (Wea thorn 11, Carruthers, Saxon), 22sec, equal 2. Also ran:

In the evening an enjoyable social function was held, at which the trophies won during the day were presented. Mr Gray, secretary of the Lawrence Fire Board, was in the chair, and a letter was read from the secretary oi the U.F.B.A. welcoming the members and wishing the brigades all success. Mr C. J. Wood referred to the illness of Captain T. J. Waits, and it was resolved to send him a letter wishing him a speedy recovery. During the evening the chairman of tho Fire Board, Mr Talboys, arrived, aaid extended a welcome to the visitors, also to Mr F. Waite, M.F., who suitably acknowledged. Mr Talboys presented the Watts Cup to Foreman Gibb, of the .Milton Brigade, and congratulated the brigade on winning the trophy. Foreman Gibbs acknowledged, and the health of the winning brigade was duly honoured. The health of Fireman Carrnthers, of Lawrence, winner of the one-man event, was also enthusiastically honoured. Songs wore acceptably rendered by Messrs Anderson, Baird, and Milligan, while Mr 0. Jackman gave an entertaining recitation on ‘ The Fire Brigade.’ The function was a very successful and enjoyable one. and a fitting conclusion to a good day’s sport.
