LOCALLY-MADE SLUICE VALVES For the first time hydraulicallyoperated sluice valves for the power station at Waipori have been made in New Zealand, Messrs A. and T. Burt Ltd. having competed against outside manufacturers when tenders were received by the corporation about four months ago, _ . Each of the valves is about Bft in height, each weighs approximately 3J tons, and at tho inlet is 20in in diameter. Two valves have been completed, tested, and passed by the City Corporation, and four others are at present being assembled. - ■ The valves were made and designed by Messrs A. and T. Burt Ltd. to replace the Johnson Boving valves at Waipori, and-they have been designed to withstand a working pressure of 3151 b to tho square inch and a test pressure of 4701 b per square inch. They are operated by means of water pressure from the pipe line, tho water being allowed to enter the hydraulic cylinder, which in each instance is at the top of the valve casing. The water pressure lifts the valves or closes them, as the case may be. A ,special regulating valve is fitted to the hydraulic cylinder in each case so that this may bo done.,. Four-inch diameter hy-pass valves are also fitted, so that when a Valve is being opened the pressure can bo relieved from the tongue, which makes it easier to lift. Indicator gear is fitted to the cylinder to enable the power-house' operators to know exactly how much the valve is opened.
