FROM ‘ STAR ’ FILES The polling for the election of the Mayor of Dunedin resulted as follows:—A. H. Ross, 872 votes; H. S. Fish, 688. For the South Dunedin Mayoralty Mr G. M. M‘Bride beat Mr N. Moloney by 156 votes to 124; for Caversham Mr William Bridgman polled 197 votes and Mr William Bragg 153; and for West Harbour Mr Norman Wood received 120 votes and Mr Thomas De Lacy 43, « * # * Mr W, Hutchison, M.H.R., was reelected Mayor of Wellington by a substantial majority. * « w * Latest intelligence from the Cape states that 1,500 colonials repulsed 5,000 Basutos. Three hundred rebels and six colonials were killed. *«- * » We regret,to hear of the untimely death of Captain Robertson, the signal master at Port Chalmers. While in tho act of leaving the ship Dunedin ho missed his footing and fell into the water. Ho was taken out by a waterman, but efforts to resusciato him failed. Captain Robertson was greatly respected at the port. Opals are being extensively found in Queensland and the jewellers there are busy cutting and polishing them. « « * * On October 18 telephonic experiments were conducted successfully between St. Louis and Omaha, a distance of 410 miles. Songs sung in the one city were plainly heard" in the other. » » » * A steamer of the Messagerios Maritime Company, of France, came into collision with another vessel off the coast of Italy, near Spezzia. The Messagerios steamer sank almost immediately. In all 240. lives were lost. » * * '« At .the Newmarket Second October Meeting Robert the. Devil won the Champion Stakes, with Bend Or second. The ivinners of the Derby and the St. Leger have now met four times. Bend Or Avon the Derby, beating Robert tho Devil by half a head. Robert the Devil Avon the St. Leger Avith Bend Or unplaced. He won tho Newmarket Second Great Foal Stakes, beating Bend Or by a head, and he has iioav Avon the Champion Stakes, Avith Bend Or second.
