UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

CITIZEN'S COMMITTEE FUNDS NEEDED-FURTHER APPEAL A well-attended meeting of the above committee was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening, Mr M. Silverstone (chairman) presiding. The secretary gave a report of the position the committee was in in relation to its finance. This showed that since the committee received the art union funds the demands had very materially increased, and especially so in the last two weeks. The ladies and their assistants at the depot had hoped for a slackening off in consequence of seasonal work being available, but this had so far not eventuated, and if the same number had to be maintained at the same standard of rationing, then the committee's funds must be materially augmented, or it would not be able to carry on any longer than the end of November. This, the committee felt, would be a sad position in view of Christmas coming in the next month, when everyone expected a little extra, and also as the unemployment insurance would not (at the earliest) be available till early next year. ... In view of this, and desiring to carry on the alleviation of the need prevalent, a motion was carried to the effect that a special appeal bo issued in both papers for increased support to the Citizens’ Relief Committee operating at the Trades Hall. There is a big demand for clothing of all sorts, and especially for babies’ clothes. In the hope that the depot can still be of use and function as it is now doing, the committee makes this appeal. Donations in cash or kind can be left at the Trades Hall, addressed to P. Neilson, hon. secretary, Citizens Unemployment Relief Committee, or to 3 Regent road, Dunedin. The following donations are acknowledged with thanks:—M. Silverstone’s staff, £2 2s: Roslyn Woollen Mills employees, £ll 2s; Bates and Co., potatoes; Sagar and Co., potatoes; Canine and M'Leod, meat; Reilly and Co., vegetables; J. and W-. Abbott, bread; Dr F,, clothes; also several anonymous donations of clothing and one parcel of jam.
