LA BARBA BEATS CHOCOLATE NEW YORK, November 3. Fidel La Barba gained a decision over Kid Chocolate in a ten-round bout. La Barba opened with a rush, but Chocolate’s defence was good, and tied up La Barba. The exchanges were brisker in the second round, La Barba scoring to the body and Chocolate to the chin. The former was subjected to an early “ pasting” in the third, but rallied sensationally, and staggered Chocolate with a two-fisted attack. La Barba held the advantage in the fourth, and kept his opponent on the defensive. Both slowed up in the fifth round, but La Barba was still the aggressor. In the sixth Chocolate was jolted by La Barba’s left uppercuts just before the bell. Chocolate rallied in the seventh round and outboxed and outfought La Barba, There was not much to choose between the men in the eighth, and the crowd booed the hugging tactics of both. Chocolate stung La Bai'ha in the ninth with heavy punches, the Cuban making a comeback, but La Barba gave little ground. La Barba tbo fight in the tenth with a whirlwind finish, and lie punched Chocolate heavily about the body.

OTAGO ASSOCIATION

GILLESPIE t. HECTOR LEGKIE. A meeting of the Otago Boxing Association was held last evening, Mr F. J. Campbell presiding. The Match Committee reported that arrangements had been completed for the staging of the professional bout between Norman Gillespie, of Australia, and Hector Leckie, the dominion light-weight champion. Two preliminary bouts would bo staged, Drew v. Richmond and Lowe v. Strickland (Wellington). In reply to the association’s protest against the sending of a team to South Africa in preference to negotiating with Australia with a view to establishing international championships, the New Zealand Council wrote stating that a team would not be sent to South Africa this season, but it was possible than an invitation would be extended from the South African Association next year. Negotiations with Australia were being carried on. The Christchurch Amateur Boxing and Sports Club wrote stating that it was prepared to receive an Otago team on December 2 to compete against a Canterbury team for tho Wairongoa Shield. —It was decided to send a team of eight as follows:—Anderson, Rich mond, Walker, Lowe, Leckie (two), Watt, and Watson. Tho Now Zealand Council wrote stating that it was forwarding the Morgan Cup for presentation to A. S. Lowe. Mr A. Bain wrote on behalf of Charley Glasson, of Australia, seeking contests in Dunedin.—The matter was referred to tho Match Committee.
