A QUIET WEEK-END

(British Official Wireless.), RUGBY, October 11. (Received October 13, at 11 a.ffi.) There was no formal meeting of the Imperial Conference or of its various committees to-day, and as usual the business will also be discontinued tomorrow. The Prime Minister left for Chequers this morning after the funeral procession had passed through London. Mr and Mrs Scullin arid Mr P. M’Gilligan (Irish E’reo State) are spending the week-end at Chequers, arid other members of tho Australian and, Irish delegations Will be guests there to luncheon to-morrow. Meanwhile the economic questions before tho conference are receiving wide spread attention, notably, the proposals for tariff modification and increased preference for Empire products. In this connection tho Canadian Prime Minister’s suggestions are regarded as an important contribution to the discussions now proceeding within tho conference. The United Kingdom Government had made it clear to thb other Governments ropre-

sented at the conference that while it is willing to consider any proposal Which may bo brought forward—not excluding preferences—any such consideration must be based on two general conditions—-that the Government cannot agree to any proposal which will involve an increase in the cost of living in this country, and that nothing can be done which Will interfere suddenly with the commercial treaties with foreign countries which ato already in existence.
