Tho situation in tho North-west province in India has greatly improved. In particular, the menace caused by the concentration of hostile tribesmen on the western bordfr of the Kurram Valley has been removed, and tho Government of India has sent a message to Mr S. E. Pears (Chief Commissioner of the frontier province) expressing its appreciation of the services rendered by those concerned in tho defensive operations, including the officers and men of the regular forces and tho military and Royal Air Force, members ot the political staff of the Kurram Agency, and tho inhabitants of the valley, for tho manner in which tho duties were performed in the face of difficulty and danger. A special word is given to tho village levies, who gallantly cooperated with tho Crown forces. One year’s revenue has been remitted to the inhabitants of tho valley, and a gratuity on one month’s pay has been given to all ranks engaged in the defensive operations. , ,
