OBSTETRICAL EDUCATION
TRAVEUIHG SCHOLARSHIPS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 17. The executive of the New Zealand Obstetrical Society held its half-yearly meeting to-day. It was decided to hand over the sum of £6,000, being the surplus of the endowment over and above the £25,000 required for endowing the chair of obstetrics, to tho Otago University Council as a trust fund to bo used for the benefit of obstetrical education in the dominion per medium of travelling scholarships in 'obstetrics and diseases of women for Now Zealand graduates of medicine, and also for the endowment of_ research work in obstetrical matters in the dominion. The society’s solicitors advised that it would be quite in order for the surplus to be used for such a purpose. The administration of the £6,000 trust will be governed by a board consisting of representatives of the Otago University,; the Medical School, and tho Obstetrical Society. The society considers that the greatest benefit to the dominion will result if, for tho next fifteen -years, tho revenue from this £6,000 is_ devoted entirely to travelling scholarship purposes, blit in order to make provision for tho distant future it has included the word “research” in the title of the trust. Later in the day ten members of tho executive from all parts of New Zealand waited on the Minister of Education (Mr H. Atmore) requesting that the matter of the subsidy on tho £25,000 handed over to tho University authorities on May 21 for the purpose of endowing the chair of obstetrics should be made available immediately. The deputation pointed out that the University authorities had all arrangements made for advertising in Britain for applications for the position, but until the subsidy was available they did not'feel justified in proceeding further. Tho Minister assured tho deputation of his desire to assist the council in the appointment. He said that Cabinet had decided this week that it would pay to tho Otago University Council interest on th© "amount of the subsidy due until the full subsidy was available, thus making it possible for tho University authorities to take tho necessary steps. Applications for the chair have to bo in the High Commissioner’s office, London, in January.
