MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The members of tho Otago High Schools’ Board held their monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, Dr G. E. Thompson being in the chair. The following were also present:—Mrs S. M. Park, Archdeacon Fitchett, the Hon. D. T. Fleming, Dr Marshall Macdonald, Messrs R. S. Black, J. C. Stephens, J. J. Mallard, and W. R Brugh. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. It was shown in the financial statement that the receipts since August 18 had been £2,101 2s 9d, and that the expenditure had come to £2,092 17s fid, the excess of receipts over expenditure being £8 5s 3d. Hie accounts passed for payment amounted to £1,853 os Id, of which the sum of £1,474 11s lOd was for teachers salaries DIAMOND JUBILEE. Miss King (principal of the Girls’ High School) wrote stating that arrangements were well in hand for the celebration of the schools’ diamond jubilee, and that the proposed functions would take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (January 30, Ji, and February 1, 1931).— Received. REPAIRS TO STONEWORK. The Education Board wrote asking whether there was any reason why the cost of the repairs to stonework at the Boys’ High School should not be found from the credit balance in tho Endowment Income Account at tho end of last year. , It was intimated that in reply the secretary had stated that the board could see no reason for departing from the normal course of charging the cost against tho endowment revenue for tho year during which the work had to bo paid for, and, as it was intended to commence tho work towards tho end of this year, it would, under that arrangement, be paid for out of next year’s revenue. The cost would not fall on the consolidated fund until 1932. The reply was approved. SAW-MILLING LICENSE. Tho Hon. Harry Atmoro (Minister of Education) wrote stating that in connection with tho matter of granting a saw-milling license over RIO acres of forest included in the board s reserve he had. on further consideration, decided to approve of the granting of saw-milling rights and of the proposal to pay “ fifths ” to the Clutha County Council. The department had been directed to arrange accordingly. The letter was received. LIBRARY BOOKS. The Director of Education wrote advising that a subsidy of £l3 14s 9d had been approved towards the purchase of library books for the Girls High School. The letter was received. RECTOR’S REPORT. The rector of the Boys’ High School reported that the total number .of boys, so far as could be at present ascertained, was 678, of whom 242 were seniors, 418 juniors, and eighteen paying pupils. Tho corresponding totals for 1925-29 were respectively 624, 626, 651, 68T, and 662. In tho first week of the term holidays the school football team visited Invercargill for tho purpose of taking part in the annual nigh schools’ tournament with the Christchurch, Southland, and Timaru Schools. The performance of the Otago hoys, though they wore not the final winners, was creditable. They won their match against Christchurch by 14 points to 3, but in the final lost to Southland by 8 to 6. They were much indebted to their hosts at Invercargill for their generous hospitality. He wished also once more to acknowledge the warm interest shown by the presence of several of the senior old boys. The report was received.
