FATHER TAKES A CHANCE
, LIPE-OR-DEATH OPERATION, Although he had no surgical experience, a father performed an operation at sea and saved the life of his nine-yoar-okl son. Captain R. W. Crome took his boy on the Ellerman liner City of Alexandria on a. voyage from New York to Brisbane for the sake of his health. The child had previously been operated upon for empyema—presumably an incision to release fluid from tbo region of tho lungs—and when tho liner was many miles out at sea ho was taken dangerously ill. Tho distracted father, noticing the marks left by the operation, says the ‘ News of tho World,’ decided to take tho only chance there was of saving the boy’s life. No anesthetics wore available, but the operation was canned out successfully. When the ship reached Brisbane the boy walked ashore without assistance.
