During tho visit to Dunedin nest month of the Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) he will pay a visit to the Museum on Wednesday afternoon, October 15. Recommendations of the Finance Committee at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the University Council were approved—namely, that Miss Alice M. Copping be offered Mrs Fisher’s position in the Home Science School for one year at a salary of £350, and that Mlisses Frengley and H. M. Thomson be appointed as assistants for one year at £275 and £250 respectively. Miss Copping is a distinguished graduate of the Victoria College, Wellington, and at the present time is carrying on research work at the University College, London.

Dr A. M. Begg, who is at present carrying out cancer research, was yesterday appointed a research fellow, by the University Council. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr T. R. Fleming was passed yesterday by the University, Council. The Vice-chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) stated that, though Mr Fleming was not a member of the council, he was a member of the University Senate for two years. As senior inspector in Otago for several years, as a member of the Senate, and in various other ways, he gave long and valuable service to the cause of education in New Zealand.

The Otago Education Board this morning placed on record its deep regret at the death of Mr T. R. Fleming, who was senior inspector of schools in the Otago district between 1917 and 1926. The chairman (Mr Wallace) said that Mr Fleming had endeared himself to the board, and had proved himself a good friend, a good inspector, and a good servant. He would be missed by everyone. The sympathy of the board will be conveyed to the relatives.

At yesterday afternoon’s University Council, Sir Thomas Sidey was reappointed Chancellor and Mr W. J. Morrell Vice-chancellor for the ensuing year.

Yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the University Council approved of the recommendation of the Professorial Board that an award of the diploma of A.O.S.M. in geology be made to Mr G. J. Williams.

The death is reported from - Auckland of Mr Frank Meyer, aged eightyturee, who arrived in the dominion from Cologne sixty-fivo years ago, and was on various Otago goldfields. At the joint meeting of the Classical Association and the Otago Institute last night the chairman (Mr S. Angel!) referred to the loss both bodies had suffered through the death of two members —Mr A. Bathgate and Mr T. R. Fleming. He spoke of the interest they had always taken in the activities of the two bodies, and moved a vote of condolence with the relatives of the deceased.

At the meeting of the University Council yesterday a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr A. A. Pinch. It was stated that the late Mr Finch, who was one of the law lecturers for some time and who was the , first dean of the law faculty, had done ' good serv ice for the University.
