CRICKET

ALDION CLUB

Tho feature of the sixty-seventh annual meeting of the Albion Club, held last evening,, was the enthusiasm shown by members in tho forthcoming season. ’ About forty member-, wore present, Mr L, J. Joel presiding in the absence of the president (Mr J. J, Clark). In moving the ■ adoption of the annual report, the Chairman said that tho club would be satisfied with last year’s results. Some might say that tho Albion had been lucky in. getting to the top, but in cricket 1 there was always au element of luck. The last match of the season was regarded is one of the most exciting club matches; All the teams were fairly close, but the team that surprised them most was the Christian Brothers’ side, which deserved its rise to senior status. There wpro six teams in tho competition, and there appeared to be an application coming forward from another club this year. He did not know what decision the O.C.A. would arrive at with regard to this question. He referred to the chib’s removal to Logan Park, which he considered would be tho best cricket ground in Dunedin in a few-years to come. The chib had lost several of its old and valued members. He referred to Mr T. T. Ritchie and Air G. Hayden. The latter was a very old member, and played in the early ’eighties, while Mr Ritchie was a member who always gave liber ally to tho game, and who was recognised as an enthusiastic and generous supporter of cricket. The speaker appealed to members to do their best in an endeavour to have the Albion Club represented in the Now Zealand team to visit the Old Country next year. Mr H. J. Duncan seconded the adoption of tho report, which was carried. Air H. J. Duncan said that some members were rather lax in the payment of their subscriptions, and he suggested that subscriptions should be raised, the addition to bo refunded il payment was made before a certain date. Ho moved that subscriptions for the coming season be raised to 37s 6d for players over nineteen years of ago and £1 for players under nineteen, a rebate in the first case of 5s if paid on or before December 15, and in the second ease a rebate of 2s 6d under the same conditions. Tho motion was carried. Dr A. A. Reid referred to the question of coaching. He said that it was a difficult matter to give every player professional coaching, and lie thought that they should delegate to their club captain the power to select promising members and see that thef club got its share of Coach Badeock’s services. He thought that the club was moving on tho right lines when it elected a Coaching Committee. These members should co-operate with their club captain to enable him to pick out the best material. Dr Reid also outlined the proposal contained in Mr J. Fraser’s notice of motion that the Management Committee of tho O.C.A. be deduced to a smaller body. He thought that the matter could well be left in tbe bands of tbe club’s delegates to use their discretion as to how to vote on the proposal at the annual meeting. Air Joel said that the now proposal seemed to him to be au excellent idea. Ho thought that it was not desirable that life members should bo able to vote at tbe meetings at all. The following is the list of, trophy winners during the past season: —■ First grade: Batting, J. Barron ; bowling, J. Af'Haffio. Second grade A: Batting, W. J. Sanders; bowling, J. Frood. Messrs F. Williams, 11. J. Duncan, md H. Vorrath wore elected as life members of tho chib. Six new members were elected, and it was decided to hold the first practice of the club on October 4, tbe opening day being fixed for October 11. Mr J. H. Abbott announced that Air L. J.
