The madman first got possession of a rifle by gaining entrance to the armoury, then, forcing his way into Mrs Madgwick’s room, shot her down, and shot in turn an Indian who was on guard at the entrance to the station. Fout other Indian police fled out of the building. On returning from patrol duty Mr Madgwick was met with a hail of bullets from a machine gun. Reinforcements, including fifty European police, led by Captain-super-intendent Wolfe, arrived from Hongkong. Quickly surrounding the police station, which is well fortified with barbed wire, they'returned the mad constable’s fire for two hours. Finally the Indian’s fire ceased and the attackers carried out a charge.
