LEITH STREET BRIDGE
ITS REPLACEMENT URGED ECHO OF FLOOD DAMAGE A deputation representing the residents of the north end of the city waited upon the mayor (Mr R. S. Black) and the deputy-mayor (Cr J. J. Clark) this morning to urge the necessity of replacing the Leith street bridge, which was destroyed several years ago by flood. The deputation, in asking for the reinstatement of tho bridge, pointed out that this was one of tho main arteries to the University and to the north end of the city. It was also pointed out that business firms in the vicinity of Leith street had suffered severely through the loss of the bridge, as residents on the other side of the Leith had transferred their business to another locality. In reply it was pointed out that it was quite impossible to put a permanent structure in position until the council had received the report of the engineers on flood protection, as it might mean an alteration of the height or width of the bridge. The deputation then asked that some temporary means of access be provided till tho * council decided its future policy. A promise was made that the matter would be put before the Works Committee at its next meeting.
