OVER 21,000 BUILDINGS

MOST OCCUPIED BY OWNERS PROGRESS OF DUNEDIN CITY In the Greater Dunedin area there are 21,398 buildings, of, which 5,625 are rented premises, leaving 15,773 occupied by the owuors. The list of the main buildings making up this total is as follows :■ —Houses and dwellings 14,515, private garages 2,414, shops 1,475, offices 366, workshops 327, stores. 301, stables 256, glass houses 206, factories 176, workrooms 174, flats 168, warehouses 104. The biggest residence in Dunedin has twenty-six rooms, while there are three houses with twenty rooms. The fiveroomed residences are the most popular, the total being 4,664, while there are 4,066 houses with four rooms. In the past year 80 shops and 273 houses were erected, and 87 buildings were unfinished at the time of the closing of the valuations lists. Of the new shops, 57 are occupied and 23 vacant. During the year 61 condemned build-, ings and houses were pulled down. , Thera are 12,724 ratepayers in the Greater Dunedin district, and during the year 3.09 S property transfers were made. The city vainer (Mr R. O. T. Evans) comments on the activity that has been evident during the past twelve months in the shopping area in George street between the Octagon and Albany street, no fewer than 1 twenty properties having changed hands, the amount involved being £184,368.
