POLICE COURT

THURSDAY, AUGUST 7. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. ASLEEP IN HIS CAR, “ This man was more than intoxicated—he was very drunk,” stated Senior-sergeant Quarterrnain of George Gilbert Caird, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car. The Senior-sergeant said that Caird was found asleep in his car on the Anderson’s Bay road last evening. The car was pulled in to the left side of the road. Mr D. Solomon, who appeared on behalf of Caird, said that ho had never been in trouble before. He was not in the habit of taking intoxicating liquor, but yesterday some friends suggested that they should have a drink as it was cold at the time. The result was that Caird had more than he should have. One point that Mr Solomon wished to stress was that Caird, on realising his condition, immediately pulled in to the side of the road. Consequently he was not a menace to the public. He was a lorry driver, and a married man, with a grown-up family. His employer said that he was an excellent worker in every respect, and was quite prepared to take him back. If his license were cancelled be would, of course, be thrown out of employment. The Magistrate said that Caird did not drive his car while he was in a state of intoxication, and was not a menace to the public. This and the fact that bis livelihood would bo effected if his license were cancelled would be taken into consideration. He would be fined £ls, and ordered to pay expenses of 10s.
