ST. CLAIR SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Mr Priest presided at the monthly meeting of the St. Clair School Committee, which was held on Tuesday. There were present besides the chairman Messrs Calvert, Halliday, Pritchard, Ritchie, Warwick, and Rhodes. Mr Priest welcomed the new member, Mr Calvert, and wished him a long period of profitable work as a committeeman. Mr Calvert suitably replied. The Head Master reported that the average roll for July was 613, and the average attendance 557, Except for an epidemic of chicken pox, which had greatly reduced that in the infant department, the attendance had been very good. Miss Preston had been on leave during the month; her place was filled until the 30th by Miss Searl, and Miss M'Ginnis had now taken up the work. The football “ A ” team had won its three matches during the month. The hockey teams won all matches except one. The basket ball teams had each wone one and lost one. On July 15 the girls of Standard VI. had given an entertainment, partly in aid of the basket ball representative match expenses, and partly for school fund (£3 being handed over to the latter). Isabel Williamson was chosen as representative in her grade. On July 28 the majority of Standard VI. pupils had attended a very enjoyable concert given by the Royal Dunedin Male Choir. The annual inspection had taken place on July 31 and August 1. As it was finished at midday, the children were given the half-day given by the School Committee in honour of having won the shield. The Chairman congratulated the children on the success of their entertainment, and asked the head master to convey to them the thanks of the committed for their donation to the funds. Messrs Halliday and Ritchie inspected the school, and Mr Ritchie reported a good attendance, except for the fact that chicken pox was prevalent in the lower classes. It was moved and seconded that authority be given to the head master to purchase a set of 1 Waverley Children’s Dictionary ’ out of the proceeds of the concert, subject to the usual subsidy.—Carried. . Permission was given to the head master to purchase a lamp and condenser for the Balopticon at a cost of approximately 50s. It was moved and seconded that Air Pritchard be thanked for his donation of mats.—Carried. Mr Ritchie moved, and Mr Halliday seconded, that permission be granted to the head master to spend up to £1 for purchase of ‘ Rhythmic.’—Carried. It was suggested that the secretary report at each meeting showing the balance in the pass book. It was moved and seconded that the secretary write to the St. Kilda Borough Council re the channels that were blocked in the vicinity of the school, and ask that they be attended to.—Carried. . A motion was carried to the effect that permission he granted for the use of forms at the choir concert.
