“ Now, guard,” said Pilkington, “ remember if I have this carriage to myself for the entire journey you will receive half a crown.” _ “Very good, sir,” said the guard, and ho locked the door. : All Went well until they reached a station about the middle of the journey; them an irascible man pulled at the door of Pilkington’s carnage. “ Guardi GuardP’ ho called. Open this doorl I know your tricks. Ive the right to travel in this carnage, and I mean to do it!” Tho guard whispered a few words to the irascible man, after which the latter went away. . “How did you manage it? Pakington asked the guard at the end of the journey’, as he pressed the promised half-crown into his hand. “ How did you manage to get that bad-tempered old chap to go away so quietly?” “ I just told him you were a bit wrong in the head.”
