EDUCATION BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir,—A nom de plum© may be, and probably is, justifiable under certain circumstances, but never when a personal attack is made on a person, such as was made by your correspondent, “Never Too Late To Mend,’ on Mr James Wallace as chairman of the Education Board. Mr Wallace is chairman because he. was elected to that position by bis co-members, and he has evidently the confidence of these members. 'fhe pittance of £3O per annum can never compensate him for tho amount ot work he devotes to Education Board matters, and I feel certain has no influence on him in occupying that position. Unfortunately we have amongst us persons who can never see the good points of their fellows, and are always ready to _ ascribe ulterior motives. It is not time for Mr Wallace to retire from the position of chairman, as yOur correspondent sugfests. until the other members of tho oard consider that he should do so, and appoint someone else in his place. So long as he retains their confidence he is quite right in holding the position if he wishes to do so. According to vour correspondent’s logic, or want of logic, everyone who holds a position for any length of time, no matter how qualified he may be for the position, should retire and make room for someone else. this line of reasoning to every position and wo would get some queer results. Knowing Mr Wallace as I do I feel certain that he has no wish to retain tho chair if the majority of his fcllow-memhers consider that someone else should occupy it, and this decision can bo safely left in their hands.—l am, etc.. It. Ferguson'. August 6,
