SIR JOSEPH WARD Appreciation of the services rendered to the New Zealand Public Service by ; Sir Joseph Ward was expressed in «- letter forwarded to Sir Joseph on tha occasion of his resignation by Mr A.: Burgess, president of the Public Service Association. „ “ On the eve of your retiremen from; the position of Prime Minister,” Mr. Burgess wrote, “I desire on behalf of the Public Service Association to place on record our appreciation of the many, benefits which the members of the Public Service are enjoying to-day through; your instrumentality. There is no one who has had the interests of the vice more at heart than yourself, and; the Public Servants of New Zealand* owe you a deep debt of gratitude _aa the author of many statutes which have improved the conditions of the service. I would also like to express my thanks and appreciation of the unfailing courtesy with which you received the several deputations representing the Public Send, i Association! during the past eighteen months. In conclusion, we trust that your health! may be so far restored as to enable you for many more years to offer to the dominion that advice and counsel which your wide experience and statesman-i like foresight enable you above all others to give.” “ Throughout my_ long association with Mv public affairs of the dominion,” states Sir Joseph Ward in replying, “I have at times endeavoured to improve the conditions of members of the Public Service, consistent with the state of the finances, and if I have succeeded in some measure in; effecting this, then i am amply rewarded.
